Crowns and Bridges

Your smile naturally ages as you mature. The most noticeable problems become evident when you have old fillings, tooth decay, cracked or missing teeth. Often times as you age you may develop noticeable and undesirable black lines around your existing crowns (caps). These changes can have a significant impact on the function of your smile, your health as well your appearance.

Crown and bridgework, is a process that involves restoring natural teeth which have been lost, congenitally missing, decayed or damaged. Crowns and bridges can correct and repair structural problems due to the loss of natural teeth, missing teeth, bite dysfunction. A crown restores an individual tooth or teeth back to their original form and function, while a bridge is a permanent, non-removable solution which replaces one or more missing teeth.

Porcelain Crowns

A porcelain crown strengthens and protects the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original size and shape. A crown is also a useful solution when the surface of a particular tooth is a problem but the root is still healthy. We may recommend a crown if your tooth has an extremely large filling that is broken down, is fractured, is severely damaged by cavities or has had a root canal treatment leaving the tooth brittle and susceptible to fracture. Porcelain crowns not only protect and strengthen the remaining tooth; they also help to align your jaw and bite. Older crowns can start to leak over time as they don’t last forever and cavities can develop underneath the crown. With 21st technology being so advanced, you may want to consider replacing your old, leaking crowns with brand new natural looking ones. We’re careful to match the colour of your porcelain crowns so that they blend and compliment your natural teeth. Porcelain crowns can not only strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure; they’ll also help keep your jaw and bite aligned for proper function for a long-lasting and beautiful smile.

A crown procedure can normally be completed in two short visits. During your first visit, we will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and then we’ll build a healthy foundation upon which to support the new crown. In next stage, we will take impressions from which the crown is made. A temporary crown is placed until the permanent one is ready. Within two weeks, you will return and you’ll have your temporary crown removed and replaced with your new one. The porcelain crown will protect your tooth, however, as with all procedures, proper home care as well as regular dental visits will help prolong the life of your new crown.

Porcelain Bridges

Porcelain bridges are a great alternative to replace missing teeth and may be able to replace your old partial denture – eliminating the need to remove an appliance every night. These porcelain restorations are made to match the shape, size, and colour or your teeth and will give you a long-lasting beautiful smile. A porcelain bridge is a custom-made apparatus that is bonded securely to adjacent neighbouring teeth to replace one or more missing teeth. When a missing tooth is replaced with a bridge, the teeth on either side are prepared as crowns to hold the new artificial tooth in its place. Porcelain is the most popular choice of material because of it is durable nature and that it maintains the natural look of your smile. A bridge procedure usually requires only two appointments. The first appointment is for the preparation and to make an impression of the teeth with the next appointment being within two weeks to install the permanent bridge placement. The porcelain bridge will protect your healthy teeth from problems stemming from missing teeth. As with all dental procedures, regular maintenance dental visits proper home care will help prolong the life and look of your new bridge.
